The Random House Webster’s College Dictionary defines “watchable” as “interesting or enjoyable to watch.” Sadly, there is no definition for “unwatchable.” I propose a solution.
Unwatchable: adj. 1. Charlie’s Angels.
I can’t even justify this “movie” with a review because
that would mean it exists. What I will talk about are the HUGE crowds
we had at the theatre I work at on opening weekend. Most of these people
were college age or older which is understandable since everyone wants
to get a chance to compare the TV show with the “movie.” But
there were a high percentage of teen and preteen boys and girls that weekend as well. And the chatter of the exiting crowd went something like “that was cool,” “they looked great,” “they were so cool,” and all the other things you say when you can’t think of anything meaningful to say after the movie.
What disturbs me is that this “movie” is being sold as an empowering experience for girls and women, and that people seem to be buying it.
One of the “movie’s” stars, Drew Barrymore, said to HBO’s
First Look program what a great experience it was to play
someone she always wanted to be. In other words, she always wanted to
be a slut who generally looks bad except when’s she pretending to
be a even bigger slut than she is in a movie about girls who aren’t
really intelligent or have anything thoughtful to say, but wear tight,
revealing clothing and look capable doing karate while defying gravity.
I understand that we are not supposed to take this seriously, but if
the “filmakers” are selling this “film” as empowerment to women of all ages, it speaks volumes about how very little they think of women.
I’d like to borrow a quote from a review by a critic
whose name escapes me: “If you have any impulse to see Charlie’s Angels, sit on your hands until the impulse passes. You will thank me.” At last, someone does something selfless to help the American people! God Bless America!
